Many songs make me listen again and again. Whatever be the occasion, I listen to such songs without any inhibitions whatsoever. At the same time, there are also some songs which I may choose not to listen to despite these being great compositions.
‘Thaene thenpaaNdi meene’ from ‘Udaya Geetam’(1985) falls in the latter category. It twinges my heart so much that I shall listen to it only when my two kids are around. In case the song is played on the radio/tv in their absence, I do not hesitate to switch it off!
The lullaby in ShankarabharaNam, the flute piece in the first interlude, the bells, that sound like ‘kiNkiNi’ and the violin in the second interlude, the dash of alien notes in the last three lines of the charaNams- making it Gowrimanohari and then Charukesi- , ‘isaiththene’ appearing twice with different meanings (one an adjective and the other a verb) and most importantly the lilting voice of SPB… are these not enough to twinge my heart?
